Well it finally blew. The bigboy fan on my case shuffled of the mortal coil. Been clicking for weeks. Anyway the pc was on for a while with no major fan running in a hot house. When I went to use it finally monitor was saying no signal but pc was on. Started looKing at it. Checking leads etc. Realised fan was kaput.  ???  When I got it out. The coil looked fine but the interior fan unit looked covered in rust dust. Really thick and quite solid. Stained my work strides!  Had a quick Google on the phone and ordered a new unit. Should be fairly simple to reinstall if awkward for monkey fingers in the space...

What I'd really appreciate knowing is it the fan going kaput would cause the pc to shut down to regulate overheating. Orrrrrr am I likely to face more issues once  the new fan is fitted. I'm hoping it hasn't overheated.... I know it's difficult to diagnose problems from threads like this but maybe someone has direct knowledge of this type of incident.

Cheers for any advice.
Hopefully new fan gets here Friday gets fitted an pc works first time.

Anyone got one, got any advice, they look expensive enough that i dont want to buy a cheap one  and it be useless. Id probably just can the whole idea. Mind you Christmas is coming up after all.

Ive been looking at Thrustmaster T100 as top spend. Dont even wanna pay that much to be honest.  Thats 80 odd. If im getting the kinfolk to club together and spend it for me thats a different matter.  ;D

Technical / Fixing Windows Problem Like A Boss. A new approach.
« on: October 22, 2014, 07:31:50 PM »
Hey guys.

Most of you who know me, know Im not that technibubble when it comes to pc problems. Anyway I thought I'd post this here in the technical section to see if you lot could lend any advice.

All help appreciated.

So the issue began about 2 years ago when I moved the family to a new house. Windows seemed to be operating ok tbh for the most part but there was one technical section that obviously needed some updating. I got this version of windows as a used copy and there were definitely some maintenance issues left over from the previous user. At first I tried to ignore it because I knew it would take a while to upgrade but in the end there was nothing for it but to address the issue. There were definitely gaps in the integrity of the previous upgrades.
In the end I thought sod it and went at it hammer and chisel. No messing. The end result seems stable and Im fairly sure with the new upgrades Ive installed this updated version of windows should last for 20 odd years with a little maintenance.

Beat that Bill Gates ya Bastard.

Off topic / New Wooden window sill

Really. Most random post ever in the history of ER.

Im trying to buy a hardwood window sill to replace the front  sash windows that are shot. Cant find a decent supplier anywhere locally. Any ER members carpentry gurus? I can get a wrong size locally but for my time in trimming down 3 hard wood sills i'd rather pay a tenner in postage.

I know this is random. Just wondering if anyone knows of a good PostnPack supplier? It's baffling me tbh. Where I used to live I'd just go to the timber merchants. In Herts its like they dont exist.  ???

I think im gonna make a DIY thread lol.

Technical / PC help?
« on: March 01, 2014, 03:40:51 PM »
I've been having an issue intermittently for a while where my PC would shut down to a black screen with the message 'Connect to boot device or insert boot media in drive' or summat similar to that. Being lazy I never got round to checking out and would just restart the PC and it would fine for a while. But today it's happened again but it won't allow me to reboot.  When it goes to start it does it in a reduced screen size then gets to windows loading screen then just goes black and monitor flashes that its recieving no signal. Arse. I've had the sides off and checked cable attachments, all seem ok. I don't have replacement cables to check the cables. I'm guessing its the ssd itself because of intermittent nature of fault.

Any ideas? I have an hdd drive and tried just disconnecting the ssd but I guess because i didnt reformat drives (?) it didn't work. I have the windows disc btw and tried to repair from that but no joy. It just restarts and goes back to windows install page.

Any advice appreciated.
Cheers.  :'(

Thought people might like to share any good reads they've had lately.  Always nice to get personal opinions on books.

Been reading If this is a Man and The Truce by Primo Levi. Extraordiary man, extraordinary writer. About his time in Auschwitz and going home after his release.
